KRTS - Berlin Girls
The internet was a diverse place. It used to be a place where the underground and nontraditional found homes; where a unique movement in a city could be heard and seen anywhere in the world. You could meet people from different walks of life and get insight into their everyday. You didn’t feel like an alien. You didn’t feel judged. It was a place to hide from your everyday reality.
Now everyone is on here. There are clones upon clones of each person. I used to be able to randomly click on a link and see something new. Now, same fucking posts everyday. I follow about 50 people. Only because they don’t post the same useless garbage. They also make actual posts. Like, their own words or pictures. And it’s not 90% selfies.
I thought unique writing would live on through the internet. Nope. Got fucked too. Thought Catalog was great for a minute, some fantastic people writing at the beginning. Now it’s a glorified BuzzFeed for hipsters who keep it open cause the layout makes them look like they’re reading an article and not a list.
Earlier i mentioned that everyone is a clone on the internet now. But they think they’re different. That’s what’s fucked. They think they’re unique in some way. Wrong “bruh.” You and your 15 other cloned homies follow the same trends/blogs, dress the same, only hype the same brands and then act like your average, everyday knowledge makes you unique and fills you with some kind of brimming passion that no one else has felt ?
"I’m a photographer; I have a streetwear company; I run a music blog" get out of here with that. You don’t do shit. It takes more than inputting a fucking e-mail and registering a goddamn tumblr with a half naked "model" ($20 says its his friend) posing in your poorly design clothes with your uncreative mediocre logo. It takes more than using filters or instagram to be a photographer. It takes time to design something unique and develop a brand image. But no one wants to put any of that in when you can click and instantly find the handbook of who you want to be online.
And when you are unique, what’s the point ? Urban or any other number of companies will rip your design off and rob you of your livelihood. Or you’ll be so good at what you do, but not tech savvy enough to break through the clutter of 15 year old girls posting pictures of their cupcakes and shopping bags.
